"14 missions and more than 600 children operated upon, many of whom were orphans."

Humanitarian and educational surgical exchange program for those who suffer from facial deformities caused by birth or trauma.

"Over 60 children have been adopted to date", states Professor Svetlana Blokhina, Director of the Bonum Center. "Some were given up at birth because their parents didn't have the resources to cope with such significant health issues. They have now been reunited with their families."

  Our Accomplishments
BoyEkaterinburg, Russia, May 18-27, 2007
During this mission, consultations, surgeries and academic teaching was carried out primarily at The Bonum Centre, a large pediatric hospital and rehabilitation center in Ekaterinburg. The mission has been visiting this center on an annual basis since 1992.

FACE TO FACE team members volunteer their skills and their time in the hopes of transforming children’s lives, one child at a time. This year’s FACE TO FACE Mission team to Russia included:

Peter A. Adamson, M.D., Toronto
(Head and Neck Surgeon with special interest in reconstructive
rhinoplasty and soft tissue facial injuries).

Mario Imola, M.D. Denver
(Head and Neck Surgeon with special interest in maxillofacial and craniofacial surgery)

Dana Smith, M.D. Oregon
(Facial plastic surgeon)

Yasser Khan, M.D. Toronto
(Oculoplastic surgeon)

Andrew Waggoner, Denver
(Operating room nurse)

Olga Waggoner, Denver
(Translator)

Stephen Duffy,
Executive Director, AAFPRS

BoyDuring this mission five orphans were operated upon, many of these youngsters suffering from parental deprivation and alcohol abuse in their homes. One of these children was to be adopted and four have been granted custody for foster care.

The Bonum Centre provided a progress report following the visit of Dr. Peter Kertes, an ophthalmologist specializing in retinopathy of the newborn, from his visit in 2006. The Bonum Centre has purchased a Retcam II, which is a camera allowing them to better diagnosis and treat retinal vascular disease with laser coagulation. They have also implemented many of the new techniques shown to them by Dr. Kertes and have improved their treatment results. They are operating on more advanced cases, and Dr. Kertes will be returning in October 2007 to further evaluate their results and attend a special academic meeting to discuss how future treatments can be improved. The Canadian Foundation for Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and The Bonum Centre mutually will be supporting Dr. Kertes’s trip financially.

During this visit Dr. Adamson and Dr. Khan also visited Hospital Number 9 and Dr. Alexei Shtukaturov, Chief Surgeon of the burn unit. Their unit sees about 500 burn patients per year, and consists of 30 beds, half of these for acute and half for chronic patients. Dr. Khan presented a lecture on Management of Burns Around the Eyes. Plans are under way for future visits which will include surgical intervention and teaching. As usual, a full academic day was planned. Lectures were given by the mission members on reconstruction of the mandible and maxilla, surgical approaches and treatment of the skull base, nasal reconstruction and correction of congenital ear problems. As well, Dr. Adamson presented lectures at the Cosmetology Institute on scar revision, facial assessment and nasal reconstruction.
